(Adapted
from the August 1995 Olives Australia Newsletter)
In
the May 1995 newsletter article "Manzanillo Bumper Crop"
we noted that Tony and Mary Nicolas picked over 60 kilos
of fruit from each of their 6 year old Manzanillo trees. The Mildura
trial gave 49 kilos per tree in the sixth year after planting.
We have been very conservative on our "Financial Sheet"
and calculated 30 kilos per 6 year old tree. Any extra
yield will be a nice bonus.
We
promised you a report on the Mildura trial so here it is. Below
we have the table of results, then the very helpful comments of
John Gursansky the Farm Manager, and finally our
own short note in conclusion.
Because
the following table is the only data remaining from the
original trial, there are a few questions which we don't have
answers for, such as: Why wasn't 1973 recorded? (Did someone
come in at night and steal the whole crop?! Or was the researcher
away on long service leave at harvest time?) Were the unusually
heavy and light crops recorded in different years characteristic
of those varieties, or caused by pruning or lack thereof, irrigation
times and quantities or other reasons? Questions, questions, questions!
Anyway, let's look at the results.
